Metaphorical Ink: Current Projects
Manuscript in Production
Jo Carubia has completed a manuscript for memoir client, Alexander Kalenak, M.D.. His memoir, Something More: Reflections on a Bountiful Life, is currently in production. In fall, 2009, look for this remarkable personal history of a World War II childhood in a coal mining town in Pennsylvania, a pioneering career in sports medicine, and a life seeking the true meanings of faith and healing. Dr. Kalenak was the team orthopedic surgeon with the Penn State Nittany Lion football team for twenty two years. Foreword by Coach Joe Paterno.
Cultural Awareness in Health Care Settings
We are working with a non-profit organization and a medical center to develop a series of Cultural Awareness Panels for health care professionals. Drawing upon the resources of the non-profit organization and the community, panels of internationals will discuss health, wellness, and medical care assumptions, expectations, habits, and practices of their cultures to help professionals understand them better when they meet in a health related encounter. Open discussion will follow brief panel presentations.
Staff Development
We are developing a series of workshops to aid staff in (a) guiding and encouraging journal writing with their clients, (b) responding to disclosure writing, and (c) using journal writing as part of their own self-care strategy.
Write-Hers Club and Write-Hers Camp
This is a wellness and leadership development program using guided writing. It is appropriate for adult women seeking workforce re-entry or career development or any other new opportunities in their lives. The club and camp environments are safe and comfortable places for women to challenge themselves and develop new skills for work advancement as well as new insights into family, habits, and life in general.
